Objects

The Society’s objects are to assist in the preservation and protection of the physical and natural environment of Foulness Island for the benefit of the public, advancing their education regarding Foulness Island’s archaeological and historical importance.

In conjunction with the above assist QinetiQ with the management of conservation and archaeology on the MOD estate.

Archaeology

The Island covers 9 square miles, made up of marshes which have been reclaimed by building sea walls. Evidence of occupation and Roman salt pans can be traced through to the present day, all of which is available to see in Exhibitions and Information in the Heritage Centre. Research is ongoing to find new projects.

Conservation

The society aims to raise funds in order to enable conservation projects to be carried out on Foulness Island.

A recent project was to provide a safer habitat for nesting birds.

Along with QinetiQ we aim to provide more of these areas.

These will be observed and maintained.

Family Trees

The Heritage Centre has an extensive & unique collection of documents and photos to help genealogists compile their family trees. We allow members of the public to contribute, and research their families and provide further information about relatives that once lived on Foulness Island.
