Do we need ID?

MoD requires you to register your intention to visit and we close registration at 5pm on the day preceding, or earlier if we have reached capacity so that we have time to do further admin work. Once on ‘THE LIST’ you will be admitted, so you don’t need to bring further ID.

Can we walk from Landwick?

Admiring your energy, we have to say that walking on the Spine Road is actually against the bye-laws. We appreciate the lack of public transport to Foulness (there are no buses on a Sunday) and really the only sensible way to access the Centre is by car.

Can we cycle to the Centre? 

Yes, the MoD will allow you to use their road to get to the Centre but you need to be aware that is some 5 miles from the Security Check, with a good chance of a headwind one way or the other. There are NO cycle routes radiating from the Centre so you are not able to go anywhere else.

Can we bring our dog?

We have always had a rule that dogs are not allowed in the Centre, except for working guide dogs. We keep a bowl of water outside for dogs, and of course they are allowed in the garden or in the extensive grassed parking area. Dogs are not allowed on the ‘tractour’ trailer. The pass you are given at Landwick is to visit the Centre, not to use Foulness as an excuse to walk your dog. Like all conservation bodies, we are aware of the pressure of dog walking versus nature conservancy, and we are very proud of our ground-nesting birds.

Can we walk the footpaths?

There are footpaths on Foulness but some of them may be closed for operational reasons – Foulness is still an active military site and we have no control over what may happen. We are happy to point you in the direction of a footpath to the sea wall, but please remember your pass is to visit the Heritage Centre, not come and yomp all over the island. Found in the wrong place, you could well be removed by Security.

Can we book the ‘Tractour’?

Our ‘tractours’ are weather-dependent (and fully air-conditioned!) and we have never pre-booked them, as we would then have to set about refunding money. Tours are booked on a first-come, first-served basis on the day, at the Sales Counter and are strictly limited in number. They are very popular and you may well be disappointed.

Can we Pre Register for Future Open Days?

I am afraid the answer is no. Registration is done on a month by month basis and the next month’s registration opens on the 10th of the month following the previous Open Day. (Please see Friends of Foulness Heritage FAQ)

Friends of Foulness Heritage

We encourage those interested  in Foulness Heritage to become a ‘Friend’. The cost this year is £10 including 3 passengers. You will  automatically be registered for every open day in 2026.  

How can I become a friend of Foulness Heritage?

Please register in the normal way and ask for a form at the gift shop when you arrive at the centre.

Is any food available?

We have a limited number of sandwiches freshly made on the day; once these are gone, they are gone. The same applies to our home-made cakes which are very popular. We do our best to estimate the number of our visitors who will buy tea and cakes, but some people register and don’t turn up; others eat more than we expect. So again, once they are gone, they’re gone. As we are able to open only on a monthly basis, we cannot carry forward food from one opening to the next.

What about disabled access?

Our Centre is based in what was a small village school and is not roomy. That said, there is a slope allowing wheelchair access and we have disabled toilets. On the ‘tractour’, access up to the trailer is via steps so you will make your own decision as to whether or not you can get up them; there is plenty of strong help available!
